E-FIT User Group Conference 2009
|
The E-FIT user conference took place this year at Wyboston lakes on Oct 29th and 30th. Approximately 40 delegates from all parts of the UK (from Cornwall to Aberdeen) attended. The meeting was chaired by Steve Driver of West Yorkshire and there were in total 6 presentations and 2 workshops. 1. The meeting began with a presentation on West Yorkshire's experience of EFIT-V from January 2008 till now. From nearly 1000 cases in which the composite was constructed, an excellent 40% naming rate over this period was reported as well as an overall increase in requests for these images from IOs. He also reported on the overall response of witnesses to the system and highlighted areas for further development. 2. Dr Chris Solomon, MD of Visionmetric discussed ongoing research between Visionmetric and the University of Kent. This included methods to achieve more robust convergence to a target face and the circumstances under which witnesses tend to process featurally or holistically. He confirmed Visionmetric's long-term commitment to support and develop both E-FIT and EFIT-V. 3. Dr Hayley Ness of the Open University discussed both her ongoing and planned research. This included a fascinating discussion on the use of eye-tracking technology to understand the witnesses cognitive processes during the construction of facial composites. 4. Josh Davies of the University of Greenwich presented his work on the morphing of facial composites from a single witness. His research lends support to the idea that morphed composites can enhance recognition and naming rates. 5. Jim Turner of the Open University gave a paper on the effect of composite construction on identification performance - with some interesting and surprising results. 6. Steve Driver of West Yorkshire discussed the new version of the ACPO working group guidelines on facial identification. Workshop 1: The first workshop gave delegates an opportunity to use E-FIT with a new paint program, Paintshop Pro X2 (by Corel). As the developers of Picture Publisher (Micrografx) are now defunct, this paint program has been chosen to replace Picture Publisher as the default program which ships with E-FIT and EFIT-V. It was chosen because it strikes a good balance between wide functionality and ease-of-use and is relatively low cost. Naturally, all users remain free to use whatever graphics package they wish with both E-FIT and EFIT-V. Workshop 2: This workshop gave delegates the opportunity to use the new release EFIT-V 4.006. Version 4 includes a number of changes and improvements to 3.012 which were demonstrated to the delegates. If you would like to discuss or comment on any of the topics discussed at this conference, please log on to the private E-FIT forum. |
